This sketch book is probably about 8 years old, filled with the work of my "previous life"
The very first studio I ever rented, just occupied. Immediately on moving in I began work - gessoing six canvasses, 24" square - made this sketch while the first coat of gesso was drying!
Oliver and Sarah. Did these when they were still living together.
Julie and the hands of an anonymous sculptor.
Sarah and an anonymous painter - he doesn't even have a face!
Raymond and a model whose name I have forgotten.
Ralph and the skeleton at Vancouver Film School. Ralph was a guy who posed for us at the Carnegie drop-in center; a group of artists met there once a week, and people would pose for portraits in exchange for food coupons. That was the place to go for really interesting faces. Most of them took it very seriously, sitting as still as possible while the silent room buzzed with the scratchings of artists intent on their work.
Paul and an anonymous model. Paul was the son of a good friend.
Franciso at Carnegie, and a model.
Archie at Carnegie and a model.
So the drawings done on facing pages,(as shown here) were not done at the same time. I filled the book one way, then turned it over & started again from the back.
It makes for some nice juxtapositions of portrait and figure, and also sometimes the ink or paint or whatever would bleed through the page, giving the work on the other side an added dimension!
